Answer:
Well, it's simple as I see it. Advertising is meant to do one thing and one thing only - sell/get people in the door. In those days, as we can see, women stayed home and men worked and earned money. So men had the buying power. Notice that the only 2 things a woman is entitled to is female hygiene/beauty products and house hold appliances. The spanking thing sort of cracked me up. But even if men made the money, women had a some saying in these areas, this is why it speaks to them. Mona Lisa smile comes to mind when I look at them, one of my all time favorite movies.
Today studies show that women make over 80% of buying decisions and, of course, partly because they make more money and partly because even in cases where she doesn't earn, she still makes buying decisions when it comes to home improvement and decor etc. From my experience working in design - natural stone counter tops and flooring, I can tell you that I never talked to a man when a couple walked in. I worked on straight commission and the way to make a living was to make sure she got what she wanted. It really wasn't about sexism for me though. It was about putting food on the table.
Either way, commercials are supposed to shock - right or wrong. This is how we supposedly remember the products.
